Summary:
This position is responsible for working collaboratively with the Managing Director of Transportation Operations, Senior Director of Services, and International Rail to support activities for the Transportation Team across the enterprise. This position is responsible for leading and directing all activities for the Strategy Team while finding ways to strategically improve freight activities across the enterprise. This position will drive the strategy for current and future transportation needs of Tyson Foods Private Fleet and Contract Carrier group for all inbound and outbound requirements.
This position is responsible for developing sustainable strategies to secure and select carrier capacity (ocean, rail, trucking and air) to determine optimal use of fleet and contracted assets to deliver a competitive value for a freight spend in excess of $1.3 billion and with over 1,000,000 annual customer and plant shipments. This position is also responsible for the strategic operations of the Tyson Fleet Operations Team and for the over 1,100 tractors and 2,400 refrigerated trailers and an operating plan of $38M in EBIT.
Specific responsibilities include:
Meeting or exceeding departmental service goals; achieving financial objectives and key metrics; planning and optimizing contract carrier and fleet assets to minimize over all freight spend; and finding new ways to improve dispatch plans to meet daily business needs.
This position is responsible for applying continuous improvement methods to achieving financial and business objectives while working with distribution leadership to satisfy the transportation needs of Tyson Foods and our customers.
This position holds overall responsibility for designing developing and delivering the organization’s approach to strategy and strategic planning for contracted and purchased assets.
Leading a diverse Team in finding new and innovative ways to secure the transportation needs of Tyson Foods with the best possible service and volume; this includes over 1,7000 loads per week.
Using a broad management authority to define develop and meet strategic business plans for all transportation areas and enabling fulfillment of overall business strategies.
Developing risk mitigation strategies for all supply and cost risks while managing overall department freight performance associated with all inbound and outbound transportation needs.
Leading and directing the Strategic functions for the Tyson Transportation TEAM across the enterprise. In addition, this position will develop and implement enterprise strategies for annual RFP’s for Tysons competitively priced Ocean, Rail, and Air Freight service contracts for all proteins plus hides and rendered products.
Develop and implement strategic plans necessary to provide Tyson competitive advantages in service offerings that will add value to our international supply chain and help grow our business.
Develop and Implement strategic long-range plans and annual operating plans for the deployment of Tyson rail fleets.
Implement Ocean, Rail and Air Freight RFP's annually for Tyson’s competitively priced Ocean Frt. service contracts for all proteins plus hides and rendered products.
Responsible for the sourcing and procurement of all Enterprise Transportation necessary to support the BU’s via Ocean, Rail, Truck and Air Freight modes.
Additional responsibilities include:
Procurement:
Takes overall responsibility for designing developing and delivering the Transportation organizational procurement strategy while also taking responsibility for major procurement programs and or processes.
Developing the sourcing strategy for the procurement of all fleet and rolling stock assets third party contracted freight and all supplies parts and equipment.
Collaborate with a broad network of functional areas such as complex management finance treasury and operations to make financially responsible purchase decisions for all rolling stock assets. Lead and direct the activities related to shops maintenance schedules warranties and road service to ensure cost efficient timely execution is achieved for all maintenance work.
Capacity Creation:
Developing a nationwide network of asset based third party carriers to supplement our private fleet in servicing our inbound and outbound customers in the most cost-effective timely fashion.
Aggressively building capacity and networking with third party carriers in an increasingly competitive freight environment to minimize cost and supply disruptions to our customers.
Risk Mitigation:
Mitigating risk by creating multi-carrier capacity in all origin destination combinations.
Network Utilization:
Strategically develop a broad-based Transportation network while optimizing the utilization of all fleet and contracted assets.
Ensuring our network provides solutions that consistently allow our Transportation Operations team to execute in the most cost-effective service-oriented manner for a customer that continues to need more dynamic and complex solutions.
Fleet Utilization:
Responsible for maximizing the utilization of our company owned trucks and drivers.
REQUIRMENTS:
Education: Bachelors degree in logistics a plus or a bachelors degree in business
Experience: 10 plus years of logistics or related experience preferred.
Special skills: Knowledge or background in Rail Operations and AAR American Association of Rail rules of operation a plus. Need understanding of USDA FMC and CBP (Customs Border Protection) as it relates to transportation and foreign documentation.
Supervisory: Will supervise two or more groups in Transportation Customer Service.
Travel: As needed to foreign ports, freight forwarders, etc.
