Governor Rod Blagojevich’s plan to relocate the Department of Transportation’s traffic division is causing a major controversy. The Governor planned on moving the division from Springfield, Illinois, to Harrisburg, Illinois. This move would open about 140 Transportation Department jobs in Harrisburg and would help the state save money.
However, by opening up jobs in one part of the state they will be taking away jobs in another. Many opponents argue that it is unfair to help the economy in one part of the state to the detriment of another.
Currently, the Department of Transportation is renting office space in Springfield for $1.6 million a year. However, if the Department of Transportation moves to Harrisburg it could have a space for $800,000 a year.
This plan is still under debate and not yet resolved; however, it is ultimately the Governor’s decision.
