More than 600 Texas Department of Transportation workers state-wide, including 48 in El Paso, will experience new changes as the department undergoes major reorganization. For some workers, this may mean losing their jobs.
Department Spokesperson Mark Cross said that in order to save about $35 million and show lawmakers the Department takes their concerns seriously, the Texas Department of Transportation is starting a restructuring plan to weed out redundancies among its more than 14,000 employees.
Chuck Berry, El Paso District Engineer, says those 48 workers (of the 345 employees in El Paso) will be affected. Some will remain in El Paso but report to managers in Lubbock. Those who can't do that but want to stay with the department will be able to take different jobs in El Paso or move to Lubbock.
