Update: San Jose Firefighter’s Union Offers Proposal To Save Jobs

The union representing the San Jose Firefighters Local 230 offered up a new proposal today that they claim will save the city of San Jose a minimum of $5.3 million.The proposal includes a 5.25% pay cut, a removal of a no-layoff provision and the addition of a two-tier retirement system for new employees. According to union officials, newly crowned fire chief William McDonald has some ideas for different deployment models and methods of hiring fire houses which might save the department overtime costs.
“We’re stepping up once again and making another proposal,” said Randy Sekany, the union president, at a morning press conference. “If implemented, this could save the city money and keep all our firefighters on the job.”
