ABC News Poised to Cut 20% of Staff

ABC News is expected to cut 300 staff positions in a reorganization effort. The cuts would equal 20 percent of ABC News 1,400-person staff.Sources told the Los Angeles Times that ABC is attempting to downsize its newsroom into “a leaner, more nimble operation.” Employees are expected to receive a letter Wednesday asking for volunteers to take buyouts and leave the company. Layoffs would follow if there are not enough volunteers. ABC insists the cuts would not put them at a disadvantage in the network news battles. Officials cite advances in technology, including hand-held digital cameras, which allow for fewer people to produce a news story.
