BUTTE VALLEY UNIFIED JOB DESCRIPTION: BUS DRIVER/GROUNDS/MAINTENANCE PERSON DEFINITION OF POSITION: Under the supervision of the Superintendent, transportation coordinator or designee may be assigned to operate a school bus over designated routes to transport students, performs general grounds, gardening, and maintenance work at District school sites. May also be assigned as needed, and particularly during inclement weather, to perform cleaning and maintenance duties of District buildings and equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 1. May drive a bus safely daily over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picks up and discharges school children, escorts children across road and street supervises the loading of students, stops traffic when necessary. 2. May transport students and teachers on activity trips to various locations, chooses the best route and meets departure and arrival time as scheduled. 3. May daily clean interior of bus and wash windows as needed when assigned to drive. 4. Maintains good order among students on the bus, follows District policies regarding the disciplining of children and contact with parents and other citizens when assigned to drive. 5. Prepares written daily reports on condition of bus, records mileage daily when assigned to drive. 6. Performs daily routine operating check when assigned to drive. 7. May transport children with special learning needs and physical handicaps (with appropriate training). 8. Performs annual bus evacuation drills and appropriate paperwork. 9. Reports any malfunctions or needed repair to the supervisor at once when assigned to drive. 10. Plants, cultivates, prunes, shapes, trims, waters and sprays trees, shrubs, hedges and plants. 11. Plants, fertilizes, waters, mows, edges and cares for lawns and athletic fields. 12. Prepares and treats soils for planting. 13. Operates hand and power tools and equipment including power mowers, edgers, trimmers, sweepers, chain saws and other grounds maintenance equipment/tools. 14. Uses hand tools to work soil and to remove weeds, undergrowth and debris from school grounds and landscaped areas. 15. Removes tree stumps, limbs, clippings, and other debris. 16. Keep school and/or other District grounds clean, sweeps sidewalks and picks up paper rubbish and other debris and operates blowers. During winter, keeps walkways and steps free of snow and ice. 17. Hoes and rakes weeds, leaves and grass clippings. 18. Cleans and clears debris from gutters and drains. 19. Applies pesticides and herbicides to grounds and garden areas for pest/weed control purposes. 20. Drives motorized equipment such as a pickup truck. 21. Maintains hoses, supplies and tools in proper condition and repair. 22. Performs minor service and repair work on grounds keeping equipment such as mowers, edgers, sprayers and backpack blowers. 23. Operates, maintains, repairs and adjusts sprinkler lines, heads, valves and automatic timers. BUS DRIVER/GROUNDS/MAINTENANCE PERSON Page 2 24. Mows, drags, chalks, lines and marks athletic fields for scheduled events. 25. Repairs asphalt and striping. 26. Maintains work records and logs related to assigned functions. 27. Repairs and installs playgrounds, fences and bleachers. 28. Assists other District maintenance personnel in maintaining District buildings and equipment and in construction and installation work. 29. Cleans and maintains District buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms and other facilities, furniture and equipment. 30. Pick up any necessary mailings for the school. 31. Other related duties as assigned. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION: Knowledge of: 1. Local geography. 2. Safe driving practices. 3. Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting school children. 4. First aid practices. 5. Grounds keeping and gardening methods and practices. 6. The safe use, maintenance and operation of grounds keeping tools, equipment and sprinkling systems. 7. The care use and safe application of pesticides and herbicides for pest/weed control purposes. 8. Methods, equipment and supplies used in cleaning and maintaining school buildings and equipment. Ability to: 1. Operate a school bus, exercising good judgment and extreme caution. 2. Maintain order among students on a school bus. 3. Learn a designated bus route, bus stops and District traffic hazards. 4. Follow verbal and written directions. 5. Effectively and safely use materials and hand and power tools associated with grounds keeping, gardening and building maintenance work. 6. Perform minor maintenance and repair work on a variety of equipment and tools used in the normal course of work. 7. Understand and follow both oral and written instructions. 8. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contracted in the performance of required duties. BUS DRIVER/GROUNDS/MAINTENANCE PERSON Page 3 PHYSICAL ABILITIES: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended times and occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Requires visual acuity to read numbers, letters and images. Depth perception, hand and finger dexterity to use equipment and hand eye coordination. Requires speaking and hearing ability sufficient to hear over phone and carry on routing conversations. DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE: Prior experience in grounds and building maintenance work. Truck or bus driving experience preferable.
