Chicago, Illinois is ending its free trolley transportation service early next year. City officials said on Monday that it is an attempt to cut costs. The city will save an estimated $1.7 million.

The San Francisco-style trolley cars are heavily used by tourists, and stop at many of the city’s well-known attractions such as Navy Pier and the Field Museum.

In 2007, over 700,000 riders used the trolley, and so far this year more than 900,000 riders have taken the free service. 88 percent of the trolley’s users are visitors to Chicago, a city survey revealed.

A spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Transportation said the trolleys are a valuable service but that they’re nonessential to the city.

The free trolley service began in 2000, and the trolleys are scheduled to go out of service January 4, 2009.
