The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority is considering firing 100 toll collectors, a move that could save the cash-strapped agency $10 million per year, according to the Associated Press.
Officials have notified union officials that they plan to lay off 100 people within 12 to 18 months. That represents nearly one-fourth of the agency’s toll collectors. The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has 441 full- and part-time toll takers who earn an average salary of $71,000 (some earn as much as $90,000 with overtime).

Executive Director Alan LeBovidge says the move is part of an effort to modernize its toll collecting system, eventually making it fully automated.
The agency is trying to fill a $30 million-dollar budget shortfall, and pay off billions of dollars in debt incurred by the Big Dig, a $14.6 billion-dollar project that built a 3.5-mile tunnel under Boston.
