Of all of the transportation jobs, a position that makes use of a watercraft may be the most intriguing. Many of the transportation job listings are not nearly as exciting as this one. Getting a U.S. Coast Guard license is required if you would like to operate a watercraft to earn a profit. No matter if you are going to operate a small business operating your own small boat or if you will be standing at the helm of the largest cruise ship.
The license itself has several different degrees. It is all based on the weight of the boat that you will be using. It usually is based on twenty five, fifty, or one hundred ton increments. There are also particular licenses depending on if the craft will be used inland or near coastal. The OUPV, or operator of uninspected passenger vessel, will allow you to have no more than six total passengers at any one time in a boat that is not any larger than one hundred tons. The OUPV licenses will allow the carrier to provide services in all bodies of water.
Another determining factor on if the license will be approved for the transportation jobs is how much time the operator has spent on the water and how large the boats that they have operated in the past have been. Anyone who would like to apply for the license will have to document the amount of time that they have spent on the water. One day on the water only counts for four hours on the water to the Coast Guard.
In order to be given the license you must have spent three hundred and sixty days near coastal waters or on inland waters. At least ninety days of the reported time must have taken place somewhere over the most recent three years. The masters routed inland license requires the same amount of time at sea but the near coastal routing license can only be achieved if the operator has spent seven hundred twenty days on the sea and three hundred and sixty of those days spent on the near coastal waters.
Some business owners also provide sailing services to their clients. If they want to add an endorsement that covers sailing they will have had to have one hundred and eighty days of their individual total sea time spent on a vessel that is used for sailing.
It is possible to achieve the licenses without actually owning a boat of your own. You must simply get the signature from the owner of the boat that you have logged your sea time on so they can speak for your training and time on the water. Many transportation job listings require that the applicants have had previous experience on watercraft.
There are a battery of tests that must be taken as well to the documented on water time. They are typically administered at an exam center for the Coast Guard or at another training school that has been approved. The tests cover a wide range of information such as deck safety, deck general, navigation, charting, and the general rules of the road. They are multiple choice and the scores are passing if they are between seventy percent and ninety percent depending on the test.
Transportation jobs are great, especially if they are for jobs that are on the water. The transportation job listings in your area could include a wide variety of positions so check them out today.

A few years ago, I spoke with a man (now retired) who had worked in a large corporation for forty years and in his last twenty years, he basically did nothing. He was paid very well and was more or less forgotten—doing very little of anything. He would show up at the office at 9:00 a.m. each day, try to look busy—do a task now and then—and then get in his car at 5:30 p.m. each evening and dr... |
