If you want to be a bus driver, for example, all you need to do is apply. If you have a valid driver’s license and you are a US citizen, that is pretty much all that is required. This will also mean that it might be tough to get the job because there could be a long list of other applicants who want the job. There may be a waiting list and you will most likely need to find other jobs in the meantime. However, if you apply in most of the major cities nearby, you will most likely find something. There are a lot of buses, whether they are school buses or public buses.
I remember teasing and taunting our school bus drivers. We would see how much noise we could make and get away with, and sometimes we even threw stuff at the bus driver. Although, whenever someone threw something he would pull the bus over and lecture us. Oftentimes he would wait until he got back on the military base (where we lived) and would have the military police scold us and lecture us. They were a lot more intimidating. Most of the time, I did not really care about messing with the driver.
When it comes to public buses, there are different problems which bus drivers face. They might not have to calm down a bunch of rambunctious kids, but they still have to keep order on the bus. There are often drunks who try to get on the bus. There is nothing wrong with them getting on when they are drunk, but if they start causing problems with some of the other people riding, then the bus driver will have to ask them to get off. This can get ugly. Drunken people do not like being told what to do, and many of them can get angry and violent. Bus drivers need to be able to handle these situations.
There are other situations which may require bus drivers to call for assistance. Bus drivers are public servants and need to be aware of things going on around them. If there is a crime occurring in the vicinity, they should call it in. They drive all over the cities, including parts of the ghetto. They drive during early hours of the day and late into the night. Once the sun goes down, there is more than likely going to be some crimes committed. Drivers might drive right past someone getting mugged. They should call that in and radio for help for the victims.
Public bus drivers do not have the safest jobs. They deal with the lower-economic classes, among whom the highest percentage of crimes are committed. Most people who commit crimes are poor or in the low class and bus drivers deal with them or their victims on a daily basis. People riding the bus should show a little courtesy to those driving them around, but most of them keep to themselves. The ones who do not keep to themselves usually mean to stir up trouble. It is the kind of job that will keep you on your guard if you are not used to associating with customers on a daily basis. Driving public buses is a hard job, but it can be rewarding.
